Saving time to market
When time and the quality of experience weigh heavily, there is no substitute for immersion. We enable automotive designers to experience their models in real-time 3D, using our proprietary wide-area tracking system PPT X4 with a state of the art head-mounted display. Objects can be rendered at true optical scale and convey a real sense of size and shape. Complex navigation and viewing of scenes can be performed by naturally moving body and head.

WorldViz automotive solutions are applied for

  • Interior evaluation (visibility, ergonomics)
  • Exterior evaluation (scale & proportion, surface)
  • Management design review

Collaborating across continents in virtual space
Users at physically different locations can meet in a virtual space and collaboratively immerse themselves in a 3D experience of a car model. Each person is represented virtually, i.e. you can see the exact location and viewing direction of your collaborators.

Crafting rich presentations
While exploring a 3D model in real-time, designers can communicate their work to other viewers by having them look at the head-mounted display output on a projection screen or monitor. No longer must fly-by animations be painstakingly generated by animators, as high quality movies can be acted out in real-time or recorded for later viewing by a real person exploring the 3D space. By providing the audience with either a CAVE environment or simply 3D shutter glasses and a large projection screen, the compelling sense of depth and space can be shared with a larger group of viewers and discussed within the design team.

Sharing 3D workflow
Designers can annotate their creations using virtual grease markers and not only store these for latter use but send them to others for discussion. The other person ideally experiences the annotations using the same system, thereby experiencing the three-dimension import of the mark-ups.

Why wide area tracking?
The only way to enable an immersive experience and to allow natural exploration of a virtual environment is to track body movements. Without tracking, the experience would be no better than actually strapping a monitor to your head. But with tracking, the monitor’s view of a head-mounted display instantly becomes a view onto the virtual world, because the computer can almost instantly render the view through that “window” appropriate to your instantaneous looking direction. This means that as you explore by walking and looking, you will literally lose the awareness that you are looking at a monitor and actually believe you are looking at real objects in the environment. This is real virtual reality.
