Converting Point Clouds into Virtual Reality Using Vizard

Professionals in oil and gas, defense, engineering, and construction already use 3D scanning technology to facilitate these sorts of projects, and now some are taking those scans, or point cloud files, and putting them into immersive viewing technology like our VizMove VR systems.

Is it incredibly easy to incorporate VR into existing point-cloud workflows. Companies like DotProduct offer handheld scanning devices, like DotProduct’s DPI-7, which requires only minutes to fully scan an environment. It exports these 3D scans in .dp format and can be stored in the cloud immediately for remote access. These .dp files, as well as other point cloud file types like .3dc, .asc, and .ply, can be imported into Vizard and viewed in whatever VR hardware set up you have available to you at the exact scale that the environments exist in physical reality. If the particular task at hand calls for your point clouds to be meshed into surfaced 3D models, you can convert those files using one of many third party programs, like CloudCompare, which is free to use. These programs can export the resulting meshed 3D models in any of several file types that Vizard can also render in real time.

Why SleepNumber had the most thought-provoking VR demo at CES

CES is THE event of the year for techies, it’s pretty much Coachella for us nerds.

The coCES 2016nference is huge, covering 2.4 million square feet full of the latest gadgets. This year was the biggest year for VR at CES. Oculus had about an hour wait to try The Rift, and HTC had a three hour wait to try the Vive Pre.

SleepNumber partnered with WorldViz to create a VR application that showcased the effects of sleep deprivation on the
brand new Vive Pre. In the demo, you are raised 60 feet above the ground on a metal plank. Then the virtual world changes around you. Your vision becomes blurry and your peripheral vision is occluded. This is meant to show how your brain perceives the world when you are sleep deprived. Next, you are asked to walk across the plank in your sleepless state and stop about halfway across. You turn to face the pit below you, the SleepNumber host says “When you’re sleep deprived, you tend to make bad decisions. We’re going to ask you to make a bad decision, step off the plank into the pit.”

September Tech Tip: Compass Example

This tech tip shows how to create a visual indicator of world orientation which is always in view. A compass of sorts, effectively setup as a “Heads-up display” or HUD. Two options are provided:

  • The first sets up the HUD as a group node which is linked to the view.
  • The second sets up a GUI Canvas object, a new feature in Vizard 5 providing a flat render node designed for displaying GUI elements or other nodes. In this example the canvas uses the “WorldOverlay” render mode.

For both of these examples, the HUD is a node in the world (as opposed to being in an ortho window, or screen space). While it is possible to set up a HUD in window or screen space, an advantage to having a HUD in world space is that rendering can be simplified as there’s no need for special treatment for such aspects as lighting, depth testing, or stereo. Set the method used for displaying the axes model in line 13 of the script:
